Bamurru Plains: Wild Bush Luxury, Northern Territory

Bamurru Plains is located on Swim Creek Station, a 303sq. km. coastal buffalo pastoral property near Point Stuart in the Mary River Region of the Northern Territory. The station is 10kms from Kakadu National Park's western boundary and just over 100kms east of Darwin. Attractions include birdlife and wildlife of the surrounding floodplains and savannah woodlands.

The accommodation is more akin to some of the safari camps in Africa. There are 9 safari style bungalows, each with ensuite, built amongst the pandanus vegetation and offering spectacular views across the wetlands. It is whale watching time!

whales broomeAs they have for countless centuries, whales are currently migrating north along the Western Australian coastline to Camden Harbour where they will calve over the coming months before returning to southern waters later in the year.

For the first time, regular whale watching tours have commenced in Broome and Rosemary from Best Of The Kimberley ventured out on a perfect Friday afternoon last week aboard the fastest charter boat in WA "Observer", to experience the wonder of these great mammals. A spotter plane quickly located whales as Observer sped to the location. Within minutes water spouts and giant splashes from the whales were seen. Over the next 2 hours, numerous humpback whales were seen making their way along the coast. Seasnakes, green turtles and a pod of Indo-Pacific dolphins also kept us in wonder.

Broome has not been well known for whales, but they are often seen just off the coast by local fishermen and they have been known to come quite close to shore off Cable Beach. Now one of Broome's best kept secrets is available for all to enjoy. Contact Best Of The Kimberley on freecall 1800 450 850 (or http://www.kimberleytravel.com.au/) to book your whale watching tour. $120 per person, for a 3 hour tour includes hotel transfers.

Experience Australia as Adventurous or Relaxed as you want

kimberley, australiaThe recent filming of the new movie "Australia" in and around Kununurra has put this special part of the Kimberley well and truly on the map. So what is all the fuss about? Let us explain.....just imagine:

A land of ancient rivers and gorges, of ragged ranges that stretch on and on and on, then disappear into a limitless horizon.

A region of roaring wet season rivers, exploding over cliff faces and chasms, creating spectacular waterfalls that cascade into deep cool waterholes.

A place to maybe catch that barramundi, watch a couple of Brolgas waltzing together in the early evening light, or sneak a glimpse of a big old “croc” sunning himself on the river bank.

A destination called “Purnululu”; a world heritage listed National Park, where you can walk among the 360 million year old “beehive” domes of the Bungle Bungle Range.

A destination where you can take a birds eye view of the waterways of the mighty Ord River. Look in awe over the expanse of Lake Argyle, Australia’s largest man-made lake, and a true testament to the engineering feats of a developing Kimberley back in the 60’s and 70’s.

A place to shop for that exclusive diamond.

A destination for the family.

A place where you can canoe, swim, boat, water-ski, or just laze about and let the world float by.

A great spot to just sit on a rock and watch a truly spectacular Kimberley sunset unfold, then fade away right before your eyes.

The team at Best Of The Kimberley can tailor your Kununurra holiday to be as adventurous or relaxed as you want. View Best of the Kimberley for more details.

The History of Broome's Street Names: "Cable Beach Road"

cable beachCable Beach is named after the telegraph cable that came ashore on the beach from Banjowangie in Java. The original cable laid by the British Eastern Telegraph Company went to Darwin but it was laid on a volcanic seabed and suffered so many breaks, that it was decided to establish another station at Broome as a safety net, when the Darwin link broke.

The submarine cable was finished in 1889 and with it came "Cable House". By 1912 the cable had been transferred to Cottesloe (WA) and Cable House became the Broome Courthouse in 1921 and is still a functioning Courthouse to this day, and the site of the well known Saturday Courhouse Markets.
